Mobile Advertising

Tuesday, November 10th, 2009

As smartphone sales increase every quarter, 4.2% in Q3 2009 according to IDC, the opportunity for more advertising impressions increases. Naturally Google wants to be the front-runner so they are buying mobile display advertising startup AdMob for $750 million in Google stock. From what I have seen AdMob has a handle on how to market, display, and provide metrics for mobile ads, while Google is just re-purposing ads that are normally displayed on PCs. Something tells me Google was less threatened  by AdMob and more worried about MSFT or Yahoo getting their hands on AdMob.

Who knows what will become of mobile advertising. The issue of location-based advertisements is already a major concern for some as our behaviors, data, and GPS location becomes a privacy issue. I am sure some will love the Subway coupons, but something tells me most people will hate mobile advertising. Regardless, if it becomes a hit Google will be leading the charge for sure.

Google’s Brand Versatility

Monday, November 9th, 2009

We love seeing what Google has up it’s sleeve on a daily basis, but this last week has had my son running for the computer screen. Google’s celebration of Sesame Street over the last week has been very fun to look forward to for him. I am sure there are many competitors that would like to take follow Cookie Monster’s lead and take a real bite out of their market share!

It was also reported today that Google has also inked a deal with Twitter.

Google plans to offer a dedicated service to search Twitter and to blend Twitter posts into its main search results.

Marissa Mayer, Google’s vice president for search and user experience, said that access to Twitter’s trove of real-time data would “improve our relevance, our comprehensiveness and our quality.”

Does this mean Twitter found a way to monetize? Finally!

Google pest a.k.a. Bing steps up promotion in China

Tuesday, October 20th, 2009

Here is an article from PCWorld.com that highlights Microsoft intentions to step up promotion of Bing in China. China might be the only market where Google doesn’t reign supreme on top of the search engine (SE) market. In China the SE crown is worn, for now, by Baidu.com. Baidu has a majority of the SE market share and this post from an MSN blog does a great  job explaining why.

If Bing can capitalize in international markets it is certainly a start. Regardless the little (really big) “decision engine” that could has gotten Google’s attention before. It remains to be seen if they can creep past 15% market share, at least.

Blog Ethics

Tuesday, October 20th, 2009

I was about to write about an article I read on PCWorld.com today, but stopped to read an email. The email mentioned a company so of course I went to their site and ended up reading their blog and had a thought. Having your own blog is great, reading other blogs is great, but reading a blog and realizing the topic is a regurgitated story without giving any credit really feels like online plagiarism.

The topic was “Bing in Chinese“, a topic that blew up on Twitter and the blogosphere in late May. It was on TechCrunch and BrandInfection, so I will share the links here for those that didn’t see it back then.

Enjoy!

Removing and monitoring Internet content

Tuesday, March 31st, 2009

The scary thing about the Internet, especially with social networking catching on like wildfire, is not being able to remove content that is posted on websites that you do not manage. If someone publishes something about you it is there for good unless you have a legal foot to stand on. Most people are concerned about their Google search results and the associated links. If you were wondering what Google has to say about it, check this out.
